Breastfeeding – Engorgement – Pain relief

I really don’t think I can feed my baby when I am this sore. What am I going to do?

Despite the pain, you need to feed as much as your baby will take, as this is the best way to reduce the pain and also balance the supply and demand. Unless your baby is not feeding well at all try to resist the urge to use the breast pump to relieve the pain. Pumping will increase the flow of milk and could increase the problem if you are not careful. Gently warming the breasts before starting to feed can ease the process for both you and baby, since the breasts can get so hard that the baby struggles to latch. A heated face cloth should do the trick. Expressing a little milk at the start of a feed can also be helpful.
