Pregnancy: Iron - Constipation - Reason

I have never suffered from constipation before I got pregnant. Could it be caused by the iron tablets I am taking?

Constipation is not unusual in pregnant women, and the root cause is sometimes not easy to pinpoint. Start by increasing your fluid intake, doing a bit more exercise, checking that your fibre intake is sufficient, and making sure that you go to the toilet when you need to and aren’t holding in it for whatever reason.

Once you have checked all these other criteria, it may indeed be your vitamin supplement. Iron and calcium supplements are the main culprits that cause constipation, so it would be worth discussing with your healthcare provider what other supplement options you could try until you find one that does not cause this problem.
