kind of defect and I can’t understand why my doctor
is trying to persuade me to do prenatal testing.

The chances of getting bad news back from these tests are
extremely small. In this situation, some people do opt to
terminate the pregnancy. However that is not the only reason

has a terminal condition, you will have time to come to
terms with the situation, and receive couselling to help
you cope once the baby is born. This will enable you to
treasure the short time you do have with your precious baby,

the tough times.
Should your baby be diagnosed with a problem, such as Down’s
Syndrome, you will have time to do some preparation. Coming
to terms with the situation before the baby is born will
simplify things for you once the baby is born – you
will not be coping with both the reality of a brand new
baby as well as your feelings about your baby’s problem.
You will have time to prepare your life to cope with the
reality of this new baby, set up systems to support you
in your new life, and generally go towards the birth with
a sense of preparedness. It might be a good opportunity
to educate yourself about the situation you will be faced
with, and even meet people who are already living with the
kind of child you will have. For example, it may help you
very much to meet and experience the warmth and love of
Down’s Syndrome children.
