Although the true name of Hib disease is Haemophilus influenza, it is not flu, but rather a vicious bacterial infection that can lead to a variety of nasty diseases such as meningitis, septicemia as well as infection of the throat, bone, and heart membrane, all of which are potentially fatal. In fact, over 10% of children who contract Hib disease will die. The risk of permanent disability and paralysis is high in survivors. Mental disability is also a possible side effect. Spread by air-borne water droplets, it affects mainly babies under the age of one.

After inoculation with the DT or DTacP-Hib, it is normal for infants to be slightly feverish, and off their food. Keep a close eye on the symptoms so that you can discuss them with your doctor. Rare cases of severe reactions have been experienced.
