Reflux

My doctor has diagnosed that my baby has a reflux problem. I am confused because she does not bring up much milk and I thought that was what reflux was.

Reflux occurs when a weak muscle or valve at the top of the stomach allows milk to return up the oesophagus. Because the milk is now mixed with stomach acid, it can cause discomfort and a burning sensation. So when a baby is prone to possetting it could be a sign of a reflux problem. However, the milk does not have to rise all the way to the top of the oesophagus and out of the mouth in order to have a reflux problem.

It is fairly common for niggly, complaining babies to be diagnosed with colic when in fact they are suffering from a reflux problem. Therefore there is some value in testing a colicky baby for reflux, since if this can be determined to be the root of the problem, the correct medication can dramatically improve the quality of life of both the baby and the whole family!

Signs to look out for that may indicate a reflux problem are babies that cry and complain during feeding. They may not like to be put down flat, arch their backs, and are difficult to calm down even when cuddled. In other words a typical colicky baby!

Your doctor can carry out a reflux test and prescribe medication if the test proves to be positive. The medication will reduce or eliminate the reflux problem and make life much easier for your baby. Most babies cease to need the medication by the time their first birthday arrives. In addition, you should take care to limit the reflux while keeping the baby as upright as possible. It is vital not to overfeed your baby under these circumstances. Burping should be done gently and again in an upright position.
