Breastfeeding – Milk Starts
How does my body know when to start making milk?
The whole process of pregnancy is miraculously organized and incredibly precise. This precision continues during the birth process, and the delivery of the placenta signals the body to start producing milk. That is why there is no possibility of your milk ‘going sour’ if your baby is overdue! Once milk starts to flow it needs the stimulation of feeding to maintain the flow. That is why it is vital to feed frequently in the early days. In these first days of your baby’s life this amounts to feeding two or three hourly. This is another reason why you need to have a peaceful and restful first few days. It is helpful to get the milk supply well established as soon as possible. You will be experiencing a whole range of emotions and new experiences, and getting feeding well established will be extremely helpful in settling into your new role.
